MORRISVILLE, Pa. — You can’t stop the charging Morrisville High School football team. You can only hope you don’t get annihilated.

On a glorious night in front of the largest crowd this century at the historic Robert Morris Stadium, Morrisville celebrated its homecoming by crushing Dwight-Englewood, 65-20, last evening.

Only the Mercy Rule and the fact coach Jim Gober cleared the bench prevented Morrisville from possibly breaking a school record for most points in a game.

With the victory, Morrisville also improved to 5-1, which is an eye-opening turnaround when you consider last year the Dawgies won just two games.

The amazing thing about last night’s game was Morrisville actually trailed 20-8 in the first quarter. This was largely the result of Morrisville fumbling the ball away twice on kickoff returns deep in its own territory.

Once Morrisville started holding onto the ball, however, the result was about as one-sided as a football game can get.

A lot of Dawgies got in on the act, but the star of the show was junior quarterback Matt Cookson.

Passing-wise, Cookson was 8-for-15 for 135 yards. He also three touchdown passes with Julian Walker, Matt Beyer and Eugene Figueroa each hauling in one touchdown reception.

Cookson was also a major force on the ground with 114 yards on 11 carries. For good measure, Cookson also had two rushing touchdown with one coming on one-yard runs.

By the end of the first half the Morrisville lead was 49-20. By the end of the third quarter it was up to 59-20 when Eric Wilcox intercepted a pass and raced 56 yards for a touchdown.

Running back Ruben Bresnen also had a good game with 71 yards on nine carries and rushed for touchdowns of 9 and 7 yards.
