Morrisville Borough Council members are debating whether to add 10 parking spaces or 24 parking spaces at the Morrisville Senior Service Center, located at 31 East Cleveland Avenue.

The council tabled a decision at its Aug. 17 meeting which calls for the extra 10 spaces.

However, Pat Schell, director of the center and a candidate for mayor, said she would prefer establishing 24 spaces in what she called an unused fenced-in ice-skating park. The park adjoins the municipal lot.

Schell said many people at the Head Start program are using spaces in the municipal parking lot, which adjoins Head Start and the Magisterial Court. She said the center’s parking lot is always full on Tuesdays because of the center’s meetings and activities. Seniors, she said, cannot find a parking space.

Council member Jane Burger said the skating park should not be filled in. There was also concern that the park is not strong enough to hold the weight of cars.

Also opposes to Schell’s idea was council member Eileen Dreisbach. She said children use the nearby playground and ride their bikes on the skate park site.

Meanwhile, the council commended the recently retired borough manager, George Mount, for his years of service to the community. A plaque was presented to him.

The plaque reads: “Presented to George R. Mount, III by the mayor and members of Morrisville Borough Council in Recognition of Dedicated Service to the Borough of Morrisville -- January 4, 1982 to May 31, 2009.”

Mount also served as head of the Morrisville Municipal Authority for years.
