MORRISVILLE - It didn’t take long for the Morrisville High School football team to improve on last season.

The Bulldogs offense erupted for five touchdowns and the defense did its part to help the Bulldogs down Nueva Esperanza 35-0 on opening night.

“We lost our opener last year and it was tough, so coming out this year and posting a shutout made my night,” said senior offensive and defensive lineman Zach Markgraf.

The spark came come from the feet of junior quarterback Matt Cookson.

He ran for 96 yards and two touchdowns and threw for 75 yards and another score.

Cookson had scoring runs of 66 and 30 yards. The latter came on the first play from scrimmage with 9:26 left in the first quarter. The 66-yarder came three plays after intermission.

“He’s our ace in the hole,” Morrisville coach Jim Gober said. “He reads that zone real well. We look to him for a lot of things.”

Cookson is the key to Gober’s spread offense and defense-reading decisions.

On Friday night, Cookson showed that the offense can explode for the big play and he can manage long drives.

Junior receiver Eugene Figueroa was Cookson’s main target.

Figueroa hauled in two passes, including a 20-yard touchdown catch on the second series of the game, pushing the hosts lead to 14-0.

Cookson completed passes to four receivers and the Bulldogs (1-0) utilized 11 running backs.

One of the rushers was Matt Beyer who found the end zone on the third play of the third series to crush any hope the Toros (0-1) had for a comeback.

“It’s definitely a morale builder,” Gober said. “I have to tip my hat to Nueva. They are a second-year program. They gave us a good look and they should be proud that they were able to come out and compete today.”

Esperanza pulled out of its Public League schedule prior to the game, leaving the future for the Philadelphia charter school’s program in question.

The Toros did not win a game last season and allowed 455 points.

Morrisville, however, is determined to reverse last year’s 2-9 effort. The offense is clicking and the defense did not give up more than 2.6 yards per carry and Esperanza’s longest run of the night was 19 yards.

“It was a good win,” Cookson said. “I am pretty excited. It will be nice to go home and take a hot shower.”
